The ALC KS3 Hub has now been open for three months, and our mission remains clear: to provide a supportive educational environment for young people in KS3.

Key Stage 3 (KS3) is the part of the National Curriculum taught to children between the ages of 11 and 14 in the first 3 years of secondary school. It sets out the subject areas covered and also how pupils are tested and the standard they should achieve.

We currently have three pupils enrolled and another three confirmed for starting in September, who are participating in weekly transition visits. With a capacity for eight pupils, we are optimistic about filling the last two spaces soon.

Our students all come with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and often face challenges related to Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH), as well as conditions like ADHD and Dyslexia. Many of them have either been out of education for a while or found it hard to fit into mainstream or specialist schools. So, what do we do? We focus on helping them tackle the main barriers to their learning—like communication, social skills, and behaving appropriately around others.

One of our top priorities is to help students develop emotional regulation skills, social behavior, and communication abilities. While we definitely work on these areas, we also make sure to teach essential skills in Reading, Writing, and Math, along with themed topics and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PHSE) education.

We try to make our activities as engaging as possible by incorporating the kids' interests. We plan lots of hands-on activities and use our local environment as much as we can. Some of the weekly activities we enjoy include community visits, Equine Therapy, and even beach school adventures!

With a student-to-teacher ratio of 2:1, we can give personalized attention to each child. And if a student needs extra support on occasion, we’re flexible enough to offer a 1:1 ratio when necessary. Our staff members are all trained to help students succeed, and they have the tools and techniques to address behavioral challenges effectively. We also work closely with qualified administrative staff who can jump in when needed.

It’s exciting how our hub has evolved from our first Neville KS4 school, which focused on older kids. We keep that supportive spirit alive by staying in touch with staff members from the previous school to ensure a smooth transition.

We’re all about building communication and social skills and encouraging our students to actively engage with the world around them.

As we consider new placements, we look closely at not just the needs of each student but also how they’ll fit into the existing group dynamic. It’s all about creating a healthy and balanced environment for everyone!

Parents, you’re essential to this journey! We want to keep the lines of communication open and provide you with resources that help you support your children at home.

Looking to the future, we’re excited about the possibility of expanding—maybe even opening another site! But for now, our dedicated team is working on improving our current space, like starting a vegetable garden and building a shed for fun workshop activities with the young people.

Let’s not forget about technology! We know it’s a big part of life today, so our students get to use tablets (with supervision, of course) to enhance their cognitive and motor skills through engaging play.

As we move forward, our commitment is all about creating a fun, adaptable space that meets the unique needs of our students.

Together, we’re building a bright future for these young learners, one exciting step at a time!
